The Christmas of Rabbits

For anyone who doesn’t know about Calico Critters, they are from some capitalist genius who figured out how to make Barbie gender-neutral…by scrapping the doll and instead creating a line of cute animals who have mansions and sports cars and lake houses and camping expeditions. My three-year-old is captivated by them–we now have dogs and rabbits and squirrels, entire families of each, many missing ears due to a dog who likes to eat plastic. Post-Christmas we have now added a starter cottage (no mansion, mind you) to our rabbit nursery, plus a convertible and some new furniture.

We had the rabbits go on an African Safari recently, theoretically touring the different habitats in Africa. (Educational!) Here are my favorite quotes from The Boy during that process:

“Oh, look, a wild dog!” (Actually a schnoodle on the couch.)

“This is the greatest Christmas tree in the whole woodlands area!” (See photo below.)

He crammed a little chipmunk into a plastic Easter egg and pretended she was hatching–“Oh, the family is so excited. They do not know what the baby will be! But they will name her Eggo.” (He loves Eggos.)

And, my favorite….”Hey, we can use these egg shells for safari helmets!”
